According to a recent report released by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, the number of people killed this year on Horry County roads continues to be much lower compared to this time last year. While I am glad to hear the news, I must admit I am surprised. My reason for saying so is the increase in cell phone (particularly text message) usage while driving. Years ago a swerving car meant a drunk driver. These days it just as well may mean a businessperson or young socialite is busy texting as opposed to paying attention to the road.
My opinion aside…here are the stats. As of September 21st, 2008, 31 people have been killed on Horry County roads. This is compared to previous 69 in 2007, 45 in 2006 and 47 in 2005.
Not only have we seen a decrease in the number of fatalities in Horry County but the Department also states the death count in of Georgetown County highways have decreased as well.
On a South Carolina Statewide view, 665 people had died, compared to 786 last year.
While the above information is good news, 2008 is still months away from being over. In order to have traffic deaths kept to a minimum on our local as well as statewide roads we must all remember to stay alert while behind the wheel and take the necessary precautions to keep our roadways safe. Put down the cell phones.
