Ohio-based Evenflo Company has announced the recall of approximately 450,000 Evenflo Embrace Car Seats, which can also be used as infant carriers outside of vehicles.

There have been reports of nearly 700 instances in which the handle on the product released unexpectedly, and more than 150 children have been injured. The injuries range from cuts and bruises to at least one skull fracture.

"The key message for parents today, is to stop using it as a carrier," said Scott Wolfson, Deputy Commissioner for the CPSC. The recalled car seat/carriers have model numbers beginning with 317, 320, 397, 398 and were made before April 8, 2006.

"In 2001 Evenflo did another recall with us of about 3.4 million of their infant car seat carriers," said Wolfson. Those carriers were recalled for the exact same problem.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the product s safe to use as a car seat, but all consumers should stop using the seat as an infant carrier immediately.
