You may elect to begin receiving benefits when you reach age 62, or you can wait until age 65, 67 70. Of course, the longer you wait, the more you will collect. However, a qucik tip to keep in mind is to file your claim three months before the birthday on which you wish to become eligible. Be aware that if you file a claim later, you cannot receive benefits retroactively.
Why Would I Ever Need an Attorney?
Well, you do not need an attorney to collect on benefits once you reach 62. Attorneys play a key role if you attempt to attain benefits based on a disability prior to age 62. In this scenario, everything changes. You must demonstrate you are disabled at the time you allege to be, and you must prove so according to specific rules and regulations.
The application process is similar except you will be asked what keeps you from being able to work. While you are entitled to benefits at 62 or older, that is not the case when you claim disability. In fact, roughly 95% of all social security disability applicants are initially denied.
I hope these basics help, but always feel free to contact an attorney if you have questions concerning social security.
