Christina ColeMarch 28, 2007 3:13 PMPolice are currently investigating a case of reported nursing home patient abuse. Friday, officers were called to Georgetown Healthcare and Rehab where they met with the director of the home and a representative from the S.C. Department of Social Services. According to the report, a 55-year old patient was allegedly chocked by a nurse's aide.
The man said in the report, the attack occurred in December but he had not reported it because he was fearful of possible retribution. Police interviewed the man and he said on the day of the incident, the female aide, was yelling at him and she refused to take him to the restroom or to empty his urinal. When the man protested, the aide allegedly cursed at him, calling him a vulgar name.
The victim is wheelchair bound and said the workers are supposed to use a lift to get in him in and out of his bed. On the day of the alleged incident, the aide tried to make him stand up and it took two works to get him back into his bed. Once in his bed, the aide - in front of another female worker- grabbed him by the neck, using both hands and used this position to push him closer to the pillow on the bed, states the report.
The man said he used his good arm to pull the aide's hands from around his neck and she finally released her grasp. After the incident, he lived in fear that she would come back and hurt him again or not properly give him the care he requires.
