Myrtle Beach Hotel Horror Story...True Case

As an attorney, I see some interesting cases. I felt this one was worth sharing. I represented a Kentucky woman whose family vacationed for seven consecutive years in Myrtle Beach. The family stayed in the same ocean front hotel, ate at the same restaurants and visited the same attractions. In fact, the family was pictured on the front of the hotel's brochure. This family seemed to have the perfect time year after year until their visit during the summer of 2006.....

The vacation began on a Saturday morning. After the long car ride, the kids wanted to go to the pool. They went upstairs to change into their swimsuits. Dad checked into the hotel. Mom, wanting a view of the Atlantic, took a seat in a lounge chair out by the pool. As she gazed ahead, a piece of concrete, measuring two feet by two feet, broke loose from the hotel's horribly maintained sixth floor roof and landed directly on the her foot and ankle, crushing both. I won't go into details, but the pictures showed a nightmarish, bloody scene.

This middle-aged working mom was forced to go on social security disability and will never be able to live the life she once did. Upon being contacted, I immmediately visited this hotel and saw the horrendous conditions. I immediately filed suit against the hotel. After nearly a year, the case was heading toward trial. I revisited the hotel and, unbelievably, another piece of the roof had fallen! This time there was no doubt the owners were aware of the danger. Thank God no one was killed.

The case ultimately settled for $250,000.00. No amount of money could replace what this lady has lost. I can't imagine what she has and will continue to go through. I don't think there really is a lesson here, except that money is the only way to attempt to compensate accident victims, and sometimes, even money isn't enough.

Cardinal Resting After Slip & Fall

The Cardinal is recuperating at his home, recovering from a fractured femur he suffered after a slip and fall at a Northwest Side Church on Monday.

The Archdiocese says the Cardinal will continue to rest and take it easy while maintaining his regular work schedule from his home, although, all of his public appearances in the immediate future will be rescheduled or postponed.

A camera caught the scene as the Cardinal slipped and fell on Holy water on the marble church floor, during a blessing of Easter food baskets. The Cardinal, a polio survivor, wears a brace on his leg and has suffered a fall before. This time though, fracturing his femur, forcing him to miss Easter mass.

The cardinal was treated after the fall at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Christina Cole
