Coroner Rae Wooten told The (Charleston) Post and Courier that 42-year-old Christina Akabidavis and her 15-year-old daughter, Marcushire, died in the crash Monday afternoon.
I read this story in a local newspaper in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. From ther article, I gathered that the driver of the car, Christina Akabidavis, abruptly changed lanes and the truck driver had no way of stopping. I am saddened by the accident, of course. I thought to myself, that amidst this tragedy, something could be learned by what happened. I began reading the comments and someone signed in as "golfrdad," who had a lot more information than I did, had already made a very informative post. Please read below:
While I am saddened by this tragedy, I am hopeful that the knowledge of what happened will prevent another like occurrence.
I too am a truck driver, and far too often do I see the reactionary gap that I have left between myself and a leading vehicle, filled by an over-zealous driver looking for another 30 feet of lead-time. Please be advised, the larger the vehicle the greater the stopping distance required!!! More tires/heavier loads require a much greater reactionary gap. When you see a gap in front of us, it is not a gift waiting for you, it is a gift to the person in front of us in case of a sudden stop.
Also, if people would quit blocking lanes and use the primary lanes for driving and the secondary lanes for passing only, there would be a lot less accidents, and a lot less road rage.
If you see a vehicle approaching you at a greater speed, wait to change lanes, let the faster vehicle pass and then change lanes; do your own passing and get back over into the slower lane. Traffic will move along better, and there will be less accidents.
Speaking as a former law-enforcement officer AND driving instructor I can tell you.....to all the people driving in the passing lane-It is not your job to control the flow of traffic, move over and drive safely; MY OLD BUDDIES WILL TEND TO THE SPEED DEMONS, you just concentrate on keeping right and staying safe. SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT.
